Professional Profile: I am a specialist knee and hip surgeon with particular expertise in partial knee replacement, difficult knee replacement surgery including revision and hip replacement surgery. I am experienced in robotic assisted surgery in addition to manual techniques. I am an Edinburgh trained orthopaedic surgeon and was appointed as a consultant at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in 2017 after completing travelling fellowships to Massachusetts General Hospital and the Cartilage Repair Centre in Boston. I have a busy NHS practice where I treat both patients with hip and knee arthritis and those with complex lower limb injuries and fractures. I am enthusiastic about the benefits of partial knee replacement and robotic assisted surgery.
I am an active researcher concentrating on maximising outcomes of joint replacement surgery. I work closely with industry and academics to design better implants and joint replacement techniques and am an Honorary Professor at Imperial College London Department of Mechanical Engineering. I am Editor-in-Chief of the journal “Bone and Joint Research” . I have won national awards for my research and was awarded the Hunter-Doig medal for excellence in surgery by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2020. I was honoured to be included in the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh portrait “Eleven Surgeons” in 2025.
